Sometimes a simple change–such as adding signage, adjusting your displays, or creating a consistent label design–can help you boost sales.

New label design increases product sales by 10 percent

Justamere Tree Farm, in Worthington, Mass., uses renewable energy to produce maple syrup and other maple products. When Good Egg Marketing worked with Justamere’s then owners, JP and Marian Welch, their goal was to boost their online sales.

They were already doing a great job attracting locals and tourists at popular farmers’ markets and events in western Mass. and getting them to visit their website afterwards. Now, they wanted to encourage them to buy products from the online store.

JP and Marian had an attractive ecommerce site, but their products didn’t look like they came from the same farm. When I pointed this out, they realized that they needed to create a consistent label design so that all their products reflected a single brand image.

Before and after

“I used Canva to design the labels, with help from a young assistant,” Marian says. “We asked people for feedback on the colors, fonts, etc., throughout the process. I advise anyone doing a label design to get lots of input,” she adds.

“Rebranding our labels had a huge impact!” JP says. “Once we transitioned to using all the new labels, retail sales jumped by approximately 10 percent. Customers loved the uniform color and theme of the new labels. We were doing the same thing, but making more money.”

Passing the torch to new owners

After owning and operating Justamere Tree Farm for 38 years, JP and Marian Welch were able to sell their farm and retire in 2010. The new owners, Kelly, Kim, and Deb, now have the distinction of being a woman-owned farm, but they continue to use JP and Marian’s sustainable practices and innovative marketing tactics.

Since taking over, the new owners completed the redesign process by creating a matching label for the maple syrup jugs.

“I get quite a few people at the Amherst farmers market complementing us on how professional our display looks. Several people have taken photos of our table over the years,” Kim says. “So when consumers see a consistent, snappy design, it definitely catches their eye.”
